Course Etiquette Pt. 1

Course Etiquette Pt. 1

Basic course etiquette: As far as the round itself goes, here are some basic rules to remember while you play:

  • Divots and bunkers: you may hit your ball in the bunker a time or two, so remember to rake the area after you’re done. Also (if you’re a beginner) give yourself some grace and depending on how seriously you’re playing, move your ball out of the bunker so you’re not getting frustrated for a while. Do this until you’ve had some bunker practice - they’re tricky! For divots, be sure to fill in the ones on the fairway - you’ll usually find some sand on the side of your cart to use for this.

  • On the green: This goes for all strokes, but typically the player furthest away will go first. If your ball is closer, mark your ball and pick it up especially if it’s in their putting line. Once it’s your turn, you can place your ball back down and pick up the marker. It’s often nice to ask if your group wants the pin in or out. If out, you can place it off to the side and replace it when your group has finished putting.

  • Respectful play: Generally speaking, golf can be rather proper and formal, so try to be respectful at all times. This means being aware of players teeing off, making sure to follow the rule of who hits or putts first, and recognizing when to be quiet and when it’s okay to strike up conversation.

  • This list barely covers half of it, but I think it’s a great starting point for beginner players! You’ll get the hang of it the more you play. Most importantly, have fun and try not to get too frustrated, which unfortunately is harder said than done 🙂
